Blog Assignment #4 (Due: Feb 16, 11:59 pm): Discuss how the knowledge spiral framework interpret the knowledge creation activities in Nucor Steel.
It can be said that Nucor steel is a great example of the knowledge management. Nucor steel used tacit and explicit to the fullest. Nucor is the largest producer of steel in the United States. But more than a steel maker, they are the world's foremost steel recycler, and one of the largest recycles of any kind. The way that Nucor steel used the tacit knowledge based upon knowledge and not expressed through words is phenomenal. It takes a lot for a steel company to be the largest producer of steel and the largest recyclers of any kind. Then Nucor had to interpret the explicit knowledge. Nucor has obviously hired some intelligent people. The way that the workers were able to problem solve any obstacle that was thrown at them is outstanding. It just goes to show that if you work as a team you can accomplish anything at your company.
The four modes of knowledge conversion is socialization, externalization, internalization, and combination. Each of this plat a critical role in you want to interpret all four of them in a company. The socialization is the process that transfers tacit knowledge from one person to tacit knowledge in another person. Externalization is a process among individuals within a group. The combination is the area where information technology is most helpful, because explicit knowledge can be conveyed in documents, email, data bases, as well as through meetings and briefings. Then the last is Internalization. This is the process of understanding and absorbing explicit knowledge in to tacit knowledge held by the indivdual.
