Blog Assignment 10 (Due: April 28, 11:59 pm): How are you inspired by Steve Job's life story?

                                                    Steve Paul Jobs
That was such an excellent speech. It is really truly outstanding to hear the stories about how people got to where they are now. I feel inspired by listening to Steve Jobs talk about his life in the past and how he has turned into such a successful person. I like the fact that Jobs never gave up on what he loved. Even after dropping out of college, he still found a way to do what he loved; being around technology. The fact that at twenty years of age, Steve Jobs had the ability to create Apple in his parents garage is amazing. I also liked the fact that after 10 years as the CEO of Apple, the board fired Jobs. But he did not give up right there. He took the time to find his love of his life, start a new business, and become part of Pixar. The quote of this speech what really inspired me is "I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love." I wrote this quote on a sticky note and placed it on my desktop. So I will read it every morning when I wake up to go to class and work. I still believe the only reason Apple is so big now is because of Steve Jobs. The fact that he went back to Apple after being fired just shows he is fully committed to what he started. Steve Jobs even beat cancer! I'm glad that there was a cure for his cancer. It is going to be interesting in the future to see what Apple does with Jobs taking a leave of absence.

Blog Assignment 9 Post a blog to answer any one of the two questions listed above.

How can knowledge management support design-driven innovation?

There is many ways that knowledge managment can support design-driven innovation. We have to first see how the design thinking happens. The three main ideas are inspiration, ideation, and implementation. Inspiration for the cicumstances (be they a problem, an opportunity, or both) that motivates the search for solutions; 'ideation' for the process of generating, developing, and testing ideas that may lead to solutions; and 'implementation', for the charting of a path market. Projects will loop back through these spaces - particulary the first two - more than once as ideas are refined and new directions taken. Another good that knowledge management can support design-driven innovation is through taking a systems view. Many of the world's most successful brands create breakthrough ideas that are inspired by a deep understanding of consumer's lives and use the principles of design to innovate and build value. Sometimes innovation has to account for vast differences in cultural and socioeconmic conditions. In such cases design thinking can suggest creative alternatives to the assumptions made in developed societies.  A good example is the Nintendo Wii. The cusomters wanted Nintendo to releash a gaming system that was more user-friendly. Nintendo then took it upon their developers to come up with a gaming system.

Find and describe a real-world application of neural networking technology.

                                                Neural networks in medicine

Neural networks are ideal in recognizing diseases using scans since there is no need to provide a specific algorithm on how to identify the disease. Neural networks learn by example so the details of how to recognize the disease are not needed. What is needed is a set of examples that are representative of all the variations of the disease. The quantity of examples is not as important as the 'quantity'. The examples need to be selected very carefully if the system is to perform reliably and efficiently.

     N
eural Networks are used experimentally to model the human cardiovascular system. Diagnosis can be achieved by building a model of the cardiovascular system of an individual and comparing it with the real time physiological measurements taken from the patient. If this routine is carried out regularly, potential harmful medical conditions can be detected at an early stage and thus make the process of combating the disease much easier

A model of an individual's cardiovascular system must mimic the relationship among physiological variables (i.e., heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and breathing rate) at different physical activity levels. If a model is adapted to an individual, then it becomes a model of the physical condition of that individual. The simulator will have to be able to adapt to the features of any individual without the supervision of an expert. This calls for a neural network.

Blog Assignment #7 (Due: Mar 23 11:59 pm): Read a chapter in the e-book entitled 10 radical strategies for the new economy. Post a blog to discuss how the topic is related to knowledge management.

Chapter 5: Feed The Web First

After reading chapter five on feed the web first it relates to knowledge management. Knowledge management comprises a range of strategies and practices used in an organization to identify, create, represent, distribute, and enable adoption of insights and experiences. In this chapter it mentioned a great way to maximize the value of the net itself soon before the number one strategy for a firm. For instance, game companies will devote as much energy to promoting the platform—the tangle of users, game developers, and hardware manufacturers—as they do to their games. Another thing to do is seek the highest common denominator. Because of the laws of plentitude and increasing returns, the most valuable innovations are not the ones with the highest performance, but the ones with the highest performance on the widest basis—the "highest per widest." Any interesting point was to not invest in Esperanto. This means that you should avoid any scheme that requires the purchase of brand new protocols when usable ones are widely adopted. Something that caught my eyes in this chapter was dealing with inventing a novel standard for an existing network is quixotic. Interfection is when firms master one network and then use its embedded standards to exploit an established network in need of improvement. It seems that you see this almost anywhere you go. An example would be video game consoles. It seemed that Nintendo use to dominate in the later 90's era, but once the 20th century came you started to see new and improved consoles. The Xbox(by Microsoft)  and PlayStation(by Sony) are dominating the competition over the Nintendo industry. Xbox and PlayStation found ways to exploit the Nintendo flaws and create a better console.

Blog Assignment 6: Discuss the implication(s) of the notion of flat world for knowledge-based companies.

                                                       The World Is Flat

Friedman's book The World is Flat is a necessary reality check to bring these factors into perspective and offer, if not answers to every problem, the drive to uncover working solutions. Friedman considers the banning of outsourcing, an action called for by many, to protect our country’s workers and the effect such an action would have on globalization. He concludes that erecting borders and walls would be detrimental to our goals and that Americans must instead be prepared to compete on a global playing field. This is an excellent statement. It seems that so many companies are outsourcing their work to foreign countries to pay them less money to produce their product. Also, offshoring using the Chinese manufacturing sector as a prime example, has forced other developing countries to try to keep up with their low cost solutions, resulting in better quality and cheaper products being produced worldwide. We look into commoditization in a wide range of industries, where everything is the same and supply is plentiful. Clients are flooded with options and everyone becomes the same. Each company is driven to be more creative and innovative, or risk falling between the cracks. Every company out there is trying to have the best knowledge-based industry. They are driven more nowadays then the past to strive to have the best creative and innovative products out there.

Blog Assignment #4 (Due: Feb 16, 11:59 pm): Discuss how the knowledge spiral framework interpret the knowledge creation activities in Nucor Steel.

It can be said that Nucor steel is a great example of the knowledge management. Nucor steel used tacit and explicit to the fullest. Nucor is the largest producer of steel in the United States. But more than a steel maker, they are the world's foremost steel recycler, and one of the largest recycles of any kind. The way that Nucor steel used the tacit knowledge based upon knowledge and not expressed through words is phenomenal. It takes a lot for a steel company to be the largest producer of steel and the largest recyclers of any kind. Then Nucor had to interpret the explicit knowledge. Nucor has obviously hired some intelligent people. The way that the workers were able to problem solve any obstacle that was thrown at them is outstanding. It just goes to show that if you work as a team you can accomplish anything at your company.

The four modes of knowledge conversion is socialization, externalization, internalization, and combination. Each of this plat a critical role in you want to interpret all four of them in a company. The socialization is the process that transfers tacit knowledge from one person to tacit knowledge in another person. Externalization is a process among individuals within a group. The combination is the area where information technology is most helpful, because explicit knowledge can be conveyed in documents, email, data bases, as well as through meetings and briefings. Then the last is Internalization. This is the process of understanding and absorbing explicit knowledge in to tacit knowledge held by the indivdual.

Blog Assignment #5: Post a blog to describe the key points and lessons learned

Building the Next Generation Company: Innovation, Talent, Excellence

- The pillars of the future of a country
- John Cambers has grown the company from $1.2 billion annual revenues to $23.8 billion
- Next Generation Company & Next Generation Custom Relationships
- Virtual Meetings/Support
- Growth Opportunities

This was a really interesting video. I can say that I learned numerous lessons learned during this video. The future of a country is based on education, infrastructure, innovation/market transitions, supportive government, and collaboration. The way that next generation deals with customer relationships. It needs to be customer driven, sales support, engineering, service, interactions by collaboration, pilot programs, and pay entire leadership team. The way that virtual meetings/support are starting to expand. Cisco is running 2,500 virtual meetings a week. The way that Cisco is offering the different types of networking is amazing. Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees will be the first sport teams to offer live network streaming. The business architecture of collaboration for Cisco starts out with vision, strategy, and execution. The way that Cisco works is speed and skill.

Blog Assignment 3 (Due: Feb 9, 11:59 PM): Search and find a healthcare service provider website that has information about how that service provider uses information technology to better their services. Post an entry onto your blog.

The company that I found is called Healthcare Providers Service Organization. This is a company that offers professional information to a wide array of healthcare and counseling professionals including: Counselors, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists, Fitness Professionals, and over 100 other healthcare professionals. The way that information technology betters their services is by having a website that allows you to navigate through all what they offer as a company. Also, by having an updated website it allows the user to search for a personal insurance plans in their state. If the website wasn't updated every so often, then this would pretty much go to waste. Another way that information technology betters their services is the security. Whenever you make an account as an user the http:// turns into https:// which allows security throughout the page. This make it difficult for hackers to sniff out their user name and password.

Blog Assignment #2 (Due: Feb 3, 11:59 pm): Write and post a blog to discuss the implications of the video Systematic Irrationality for knowledge management.

Accoring to Wikipedia, Irrationality is cognition, thinking, talking or acting without inclusion of rationality. It is more specifically described as an action or opinion given through inadequate reasoning, emotional distress, or cognitive deficiency. When I first watched this video by Dan Ariely, it had me thinking about what he was accomplishing. Dan had a bunch of college students from elite colleges all in one room. Dan was able to show that people make predictable decisions, which in most of the time was incorrect. It goes that show that a lot of companies use irrational decisions for knowledge management. We can learn from Dan that companies need to make the right decision not because it seems right. I seen from first hand experience some companies that I use to work for use irrational decisions. I didn't say anything to the manager, because I felt it wasn't any of my business.

Blog Assignment #1 (Due: Jan 26, 11:59 pm): Search for a company on the Internet that prospers because of its innovative product, service, or process. Describe and discuss your finding. Examples of search keys are innovation, knowledge economy, innovative business models, healthcare, distribution, manufacturing, .....

Apple

Apple has created many products over the last years, but not only products; quality products. Apple has been taking over the market with their MacBooks, iPods, iPads, and iPhone. It seems that where every you go, you will see an Apple product somewhere. Apple has just released their MacBook Air. This laptop features all-flash storage, full multi-touch support, a long-lasting battery, and high-resolution display. The item runs from anywhere from $999.00 to 1,600. The iPod is Apple's portable media player. The iPod first hit the market on October 23, 2001, and has been dominating the portable media player market. The iPad is a tablet computer designed as a platform for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games, and web content. Apple released the iPad April 2010, and sold 3 million of the devices in 80 days. It seems to me that Apple has taken over the mobile phone manufacture with the iPhone. The iPhone is the #1 selling smart phone that AT&T carries. The iPhone could only be used for AT&T service, but that all has changed this year. Verizon has just announced that they have made a deal with Apple to allow Verizon customers to buy the iPhone starting on February 10th 2011. I feel bad for Blackberry, HTC, Android, etc etc, because the iPhone is going to blew them out of the water!
